What the step requires

SP 800-63A-4 requires the proofing service to confirm the person's core attributes, such as name, date of birth and identifying numbers, with an authoritative or credible source. An authoritative source is the one that issued or holds the record.

How the check works

  1. The person enters their bank routing number and account number.
  2. The device sends them with the person's name through the Foundation's router to an account validation service.
  3. The service returns whether the account exists, whether it is open and whether the owner's name matches.
  4. The router signs the response and returns it to the device.

What the person provides

  • Their bank routing number and account number

What leaves the device

The device sends only these fields to the registry, through the Foundation's router. The router stores nothing.

  • Routing number
  • Account number
  • Account holder name

Outcomes

Pass
The account exists, is open and belongs to the named person.
Fail
The account does not exist or is closed, or the owner's name does not match.
Unavailable
The person's bank does not take part in the account validation services.
